  • 再窮不能窮教育

Today, I read a piece of news. In it, there is a statement quoted by Terry Guo (郭台銘):

    再窮不能窮教育,再苦也不能苦孩子

Can any English able master help to translate into English?

    Thanks a lot!

    My own take is:

    No matter how poor it is, education shall not be property-stricken;

No matter how bitter it is, children shall not be suffering.

Mine is very straight forward, it doesn't seem to catch the spirit of its original Chinese statement.

  • How to translate "七葷八素"?

Recently I saw a piece of news about investing stocks in China:

    「歐洲股神」波頓買到蒙牛、霸王國際等地雷股,被炸得七葷八素.

It brings me the curiosity how to translate "七葷八素". I checked its Chinese meaning and got:

    七葷八素: 引申為把事情弄得一塌糊塗,不可收拾,或者讓人頭昏腦脹 ,搞不清楚是怎麼回事.

    My Question is:

How to properly translate "七葷八素" into English?

English able masters! please shade some light on this Chinese phrase! Thanks a million!

  • 目睭去予蜊仔肉糊著

The other day, in Taiwanese section, I saw the following statement:

    老婆 : 老公 ,你當初是看上我哪一點和我結婚?

    老公 : 因為我的*目睭去予蜊仔肉糊著*

    老婆 : 喔! 親愛的, 怎麼和我想要說的一樣.

    老公 : 所以, 咱是天生一對ㄚ!

This is a statement, both "老婆" and "老公" can either "get mad with each other" or "laugh with each other", depends upon how their own wisdom take it. English able masters! please help me to translate the above statement, but maintain its philosophy in the statement.

目睭去予蜊仔肉糊著 is in Taiwanese, literally, it translates as "eyes are covered with clam meat". However, such a translation doesn't translate its deep meaning. Please give me some enlightenment. Thank you very much !

  • Taiwanese idiom translation

Recently, I came across a well known funny Taiwanese statement:

公嘎哩罵翠秋隴怕軋 (the characters don't mean anything but their sound put together in Taiwanese)

    Its Chinese translation is

    說到您懂,我鬍子都會打結了

It raises my curiosity how to translate it into English, and it can still keep the funny part of it, especially this part "我鬍子都會打結" or "翠秋隴怕軋". Between Chinese and Taiwanese, the funny portion of this statement is somehow preserved.

    My own English translation is:

To let you understand my saying, my mustache will get tied up.

Can English able masters offer me your thought about this? Thanks a lot!

  • about grammar (2)

To find the answer, I went back to those questions again. This time I pay attention to why I chose one particular answer over the other. I found that all I have done was just to read the sentence to see which answer I put into the sentence that SOUND CORRECT to me. Yes, I mean "SOUND CORRECT". I realize that the reason that I read it to make sure it SOUND CORRECT is because all of them are in my daily conversion with Americans. I am used to how they speak English, so I am kind of influenced by their spoken English, and in turn I speak the same way as they do.

My point is, if you want to study English, you shall just study the basic grammar, like (sentence structure (present, past, and future tense), (2)plural form of a noun, (3)adjective, (4)adverb, (5)how to ask question, including using what, why, which when and how. You need to firmly get this foundation into your brain. With these foundations established, you will have the basic idea how English is constructed. Then you start speaking and listening. Learning English silently is not going to work. You have to make your ears to hear, and your mouth to speak. So you can get your ears used to English. Those so-called grammar rules will gradually build into your brain. To start, you begin by watching English-speaking cartoon, especially, those for toddlers. As time goes on, you move onto more difficult cartoon, or even movies, but still for children. I know, my suggestion here is very different from what you have experience. However, I guarantee you that, if you can do this daily, you can learn English more effectively and efficiently. Maybe, it will not help you in taking the exam. However, as time goes on, it will be easier and easier to take the exam, because you don't need to memorize those grammar rules. On top of that, you will have the confidence to speak with people in English and you will be able to understand them better. Of course, to be able to understand spoken English, it will take quite sometime.
