log y = 1 – log (y – 3)

Hi Stevie-G: Sorry for my stupidity! May I ask:

1) From log (y^2 - 3y) = 1 , then we have this y^2 - 3y = 10^1

Does it mean that log has a hidden base ten invariably in this equation?

2) How comes the answer y= -2 being rejected?

    logy=1-log(y-3)

    logy+log(y-3)=1

    log[y(y-3)]=1

    log(y^2-3y)=1

    y^2-3y=10^1=10

    y^2-3y-10=0

    (y-5)(y+2)=0

    y=5 or y=-2 (rejected)

    You can assume the base number is 10 when the logarithm does not specify the base number.
