In a mass spectrometer, a singly charged ion having a particular velocity is selected by using a magnetic field of 0.14 T
perpendicular to an electric field of 1.5×103 V/m
. A magnetic field of this same magnitude is then used to deflect the ion, which moves in a circular path with a radius of 1.3 cm
WHAT IS THE MASS OF THE ION

Let us the formula
R= gyro radius= 1.3*10^(-2) = m v/(qB), m is the mass
q= charge =1.6+10^(-19)
B= 0.14 T.
To find v velocity
use
1/2 m v^2 = q V= q*1.3*10^3 V.
When you simplify for mass m you get
m=R^2*B^2*q/(2*1.5*10^3)
I get mass
m=1.7*10^(-28 kg)
You check the result.
