You don't pay off the national debt. In fact, the whole U.S. economy right now and its globalized incarnation is based on creating increasing amounts of debt.
Every single time any country in the world wants to do anything positive for its infrastructure (or just about) this requires debt creation. It's not an accident of the system; it's a feature.
It was entirely designed to keep people with money in control of all national economies.

The deficit has been cut in half. Just so you know, a deficit is defined as shortfall in revenue. This means we have bills to pay and not enough money to pay it. Zero deficit means that everything is paid for for.
Debt on the other hand includes interest. This is the penalty we pay for borrowing to cover the debt. As it stands now, we still owe $5 trillion on the Afghanistan and Iran wars.

96 million people in America unemployed, the most in history, 56 million women out of work. We won't be able to pay off the debt until we create jobs. Those that say debt creates jobs should be reminded that if that is true why don't we put America 100 trillion in debt and create jobs, WHY, because we will become Greece and Puerto Rico. And then no one will get their retirement checks.

We aren't really creating jobs. The population is growing faster than jobs are being created, so we are technically at a net loss. All tha ks to obama
