4x6 front speakers replace with 4inch?

Doing up a cheap car to get to work in.

I want to hear my tunes.

All the original equipment speakers have disintegrated.

Fronts are 4x6 oval shape.

I want to use the original mounts. 4X6 replacements are hard to come by and expensive in Australia.

If I mount 4 inch full range speakers in there on home made oval shaped adapter plates will it sound rubbish?

    If you do a decent job with the adapter plates, it should be okay. There's no huge sound quality difference in general between 4x6" and 4" speakers. You might want to install a passive crossover to cut the low frequencies out of the speakers, as small speakers can't handle a lot of bass.
