My lack of sleep worries me?
Hi. I am 38 years old and I think I have a problem or at least something is not normal when I try to sleep. I have no idea why I sleep sometimes 3 hrs, other nights 4-5hrs max. I feel fine the rest of the day but there is a moment later or the day after when I feel it's catching up and want to sleep but I am at work or running errands. I have tried Zzzz Quil but it doesn't really help.
I do exercise 3 times a week. I'm very active all day. My fear is that what if the lack of sleep at some point affects my health like the risk of heart attack or another kind of problem. I'm worried about that. Any advice on how to sleep longer? Or what do u think it can affect me down the road? All advice is appreciate it.
Thanks!

Hello! I'm a 15 year old and I had the same problem as you. I was worrying about sleep, and that is the key word, WORRYING. If you're trying to fall asleep in the night and you start to get worried when you look at the alarm clock and see 3:00, your heart is going to beat like crazy which is making you have sleep anxiety. The solution I did, I had Warm Milk (sometimes mixed with honey), Indian Head Massage and back, I cut back on all the caffeine and I put some essential oils on my pillow. Those things were making me sleepy at night, but I STILL couldn't sleep....because I was stressed. So I relaxed, relaxed and relaxed and as soon as you know I was asleep like a baby. Also, the longest anyone has ever stayed awake is 11 days, so I don't get a feeling you'll get a heart attack. So just keep calm, retain your breathing, and forget all the problems you're having and just let them go!
Get better soon :)

To sleep better just relax and switch off, if you can.
If you are having trouble switching off at bedtime some light exercise (for example, push ups or sit ups) at bedtime often helps you to relax, unwind and switch off and that often improves your sleep. Strenuous exercise at bedtime is likely to ruin your sleep.
Common sleep aids include warm milk, Chamomile tea, 5-HTP, Melatonin and Valerian Root.
Sleep enhancing foods are supposed to include turkey, cherries, oatmeal, bananas, wine and others as in http://au.search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22sleep+enhan...
You can see further tips in http://au.search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22how+to+fall... which tells you "how to fall asleep and stay asleep".
