For English native speakers. Is this "account for" correct?
Hi, everybody! I'd like to ask about the expression in this news:
http://news.yahoo.com/too-much-sitting-linked-shor...
Here, there's an expression:
Researchers found that the link between too much time sitting and shortened lives stuck when they accounted for how much moderate or vigorous exercise people got as well as their weight and other measures of health.
I wonder if this "when they accounted for ..." is correct, and think it should be:
"after they had taken into account ..."
What do you think about my idea?
Thank you, everybody! According to a dictionary, "to account for" means "to explain" or "to give the necessary information, and "to take into account" means "to consider something along with other factors before reaching a decision. I, as a non-native speaker, don't think these are the same.

The use of the expression was correct,
however, I would recommend using another word other than "stuck"
it isn't quite appropriate
simply saying the link between these variables was confirmed is sufficient

It means the same thing, and the way it's written in the article is equally correct and a very common way of saying it. But I do agree with the other poster that the word "stuck" sounds odd here.

Accounted for is correct.
Your version would be equivalent if phrased correctly:
when they took into account
