What is the difference between an everyday Christian and a "fundie"?
I've seen Christians being called fundies. Is there a difference between an everyday Christian and a "fundie"? Or are all Christians sometimes considered fundies? Thanks!

Fundamental Christians believe that the Bible is nothing but literal truth.

Fundies have a warped interpretation of the Bible that they claim is literal. Regular Christians can be reasonable, fundies cannot. Every group of Christians picks and chooses which parts of the Bible to follow, but fundamentalists will take one verse that starts a thought and leave out the conclusion in order to get the reading they want.
Anyone who thinks that the Bible is 100% inerrant and literal truth is a fundie. Anyone who believes in the Rapture (especially despite a belief that the Bible is inerrant, as the Rapture is not in the Bible) is a fundie. Anyone who believes that the Earth is 6,000 years old is a fundie. Regular Christians don't believe in any of those things.

Fundies think the bible is composed of 100% LITERAL TRUTH. That is, they believe each and every word was directly inspired by God.
'Everyday Christians' will usually tell you at least some of the bible is parable and not to be taken literally.
Fundies also think that their particular brand of Christianity is the one and only way to reach God/ heaven/ redemption/ etc.
And most importantly, fundies will ignore or resist any attempt at reasoning to them about their beliefs. They are convinced they are right, that their 'rightness' comes straight from God, and no amount of reason or facts will convince them otherwise.

Fundies have different connotations. In many ways, I'm a fundie, as I ascribe to many of their beliefs.
Most of us believe in a literal heaven and hell. And we believe that heaven is for those who have chosen to accept God's gift of eternal life through his son Jesus' death, burial and resurrection from the cross.
In regards to the Bible, we believe that the Bible when written in the original form was the directly inspired and infallible word of God. However, we may not agree on the correct translation used today and the accuracy of certain translations.
Many people see Fundamentalism in regards to the more outspoken people on this forum or those they view as hypocritical Christians. We're also sadly roped together with Fred Phelps, although no Christian I know of will agree with his viewpoint.
People may think of us as hateful Christians, because we don't agree with abortion or gay marriage. Yet, they thin that because we want to honor God and trust in the guidance of someone who has been around far longer than anyone else, that we're somehow illogical. we don't always understand why, but we trust the source.

A fundamentalist is one who follows the dictates of their scriptures (in this case, the Bible, it could also be the Koran or the Torah or whatnot) in a very careful and literal way.
The closest you will find to a true fundamentalist in the US today would be the Mennonite community. They are extremely careful to follow New Testament teachings exactly.
I am close to being fundamentalist, but there are some parts of scripture that I think are more cultural, such as head covering for prayers. I do not wear a doily on my head. I think that can be interpreted to mean "not drawing attention to yourself" which is more of an attitude than an item of clothing.
The term "fundie" is a derogatory term used by those who have no real knowledge or deep understanding of the Christian faith. It is used to tar and smear those who have ethical beliefs that differ from their own, such as "pro-life" or "opposed to gay marriage". It is extremely dangerous, and even Nazi-like, to demonize a group of human beings in this fashion (as I see a number of your answerers do)

Fundies take the bible as the absolute, infallible, literal truth. The rest of Chrysostom has some common sense and accepts science and looks at biblical stories as allegory.

There is a huge difference between European Christians and American Christians, they are so far apart from each other in every way that they appear to be completely different religions, linked only by the names of their mythological heros.

Fundies believe that those silly stories from the Old Testament actually happened.
