    Jim's answer is sublime. However, the answer from the Captain highlights another classic method, that of breaking up the dividend into known multiples of 7.

    Ignoring the decimal point, we could say:

    284361 = 280000 + 4200 + 140 + 21

    Then, dividing each part by 7 we get:

    40000 + 600 + 20 + 3 => 40623

    Hence, 2843.61/7 = 406.23

    (2800 + 42 + 1.61) / 7 =>

    2800/7 + 42/7 + 1.61/7 =>

    400 + 6 + 0.23 =>

    406.23
