What's a good substitute for fresh ginger?

I keep reading to use allspice, cinnamon, mace, or nutmeg, but this is for a slightly asian fish dish.I do not have any other forms of ginger. I will be using cod and the dish has shiitake mushrooms and oranges. I've made it before when I had all the ingredients and it was great https://nomnompaleo.com/post/79058355292/fish-en-p...

I made the fish chowder instead. It was amazing. https://www.instagram.com/p/B_oVOe9jXwf/

The recipe looks delicious. There's no substitute for ginger, but I think I'd want to add a good squeeze of lemon.

  • I just realized I have a picture of the last time I made this. For those of you who said the recipe looked good - it is!! I served it on cauliflower "rice" and looks like roasted or braised bok choy on the side.

Oh, I think I'm going to make a simple fish chowder with the cod instead of this dish.

I agree with the others there's no substitute for ginger.  If you have teriyaki sauce, you could put in like half a teaspoon.  Otherwise, I'd leave it out or see if a neighbor has a bit of ground ginger you could use.  With the others, esp the allspice and cinnamon, you risk changing the flavor profile even using a tiny bit.  Cinnamon is a very strong spice.

For Chinese recipes thee is none because it is one of the most basic flavors that must be there for the dish to taste authentic.

There is no sub for ginger, it’s to distinctive.

I’d just make it without the ginger, it will be different but still good.

Do you happen to have any dried ginger the powder that you use in baking?

I would heat the oil a bit and add the ground ginger to the oil to sort of "bloom" it.

The fish sounds great (ya lost me with the cilantro)

If you don't have or don't want to try the ground ginger use any of the subs that you mentioned just know it will be "different" than before but different is not always bad!
