Can you fix my abs sensor issue?
I know it s a long shot, but I m going to explain my issues as best as I can.
I bought my 2000 vw jetta gls vr6 3 years ago. The abs sensor light and traction control light would come on and off.
I take the car to the shop for multiple issues, timing chains, ac compressor replacement, o2 sensor replacement, and finally the abs sensor fix.
The shop does the work, check engine light off, ac works, timing chains replaced, and "apparently" the abs issue is fixed.
I go to pick up the car, and I start it and the abs light and traction control light stay on.
I tell the shop, the said it was working when they fixed it, and they look at it another day. They replaced the sensor (again after I had just replaced it) and replaced the harness with a new one.
The sensor worked sometimes for them, readying some speeds when spinning the tires, but then it would not work.
When I took the car home, the lights were on, then I drove it later that day, and the traction control was working and the abs light was off. I hit a speed bump and it kicked back on right after the bump.
Currently, the abs and traction control lights stay on more frequently than off.
So the issue is with the front left.
So at this point, we ruled out:
-abs sensor
-abs sensor harness
I haven t checked the brake fluid, and the shop said the module is most likely bad because it wasn t throwing an physical code.

When you bring your car for a warning light on, and they repair it, and you pick up the car, you get in the car and start it and look. If the light comes on, they did NOT fix it. You DON'T pick up the car and you DON'T pay for it. You tell them to call you when its repaired and you leave.
If they say you CAN'T look at your car until you pay first, you leave and come back with somebody with a backbone to confront them. If they still won't let you see the car, you leave the car and start complaining with the state automotive regulatory agency. Maybe a lawyer.
Too many people (drivers of cars) have NO business sense. HOW can the car have been repaired if the car was not driven since the car was fixed and the light still comes on? Too many people want their car, no matter what. So you put yourself in the position of accepting the NON-repair, when you pay for it and take your car. You must hold your ground and not pay for a non-repair and not take your car.

Not the ABS module, more likely a bad wheel bearing. I'm pretty darn sure this car uses a wheel bearing with a built in tone ring, if the tone ring (sometimes magnetic) cracks or the bearing starts to have play you'll get an intermittent ABS light as you describe. The shop you're dealing with may be a little ignorant of this and they'll need to put their smarty pants on if you want them to do the repair because the bearing must be installed very carefully - in the right direction.
If it has external tone rings on the CV shafts then you may have a cracked or rusty tone ring - same symptoms.
To answer your question directly - Yes, I can fix your ABS sensor issue.

Go to the dealer so you know you have a qualified mechanic.

More likely a bad speed sensor on one wheel than the ABS module. The computer compares the inputs from the four wheel speed sensors to determine whether to activate ABS or traction control. One wheel speed sensor being shorted will cause the ABS and Traction Control lights to come on and stay on. Has happened to me a couple of times.

My brother had a VW van with the ABS light on: he found it was a common problem with Volkswagens built about that time. The vehicle is safe to drive as long as you realize that antilock brake functions and traction/stability control functions will be offline. The car should still stop and steer like a normal old car (pre-ABS). The ABS light lit might be an MOT failure reason, so find out if that's the case before taking it for the next test. The repair was expensive and required several attempts by different VW dealers before he solved the problem with advice in a VW owner enthusiasts forum (sorry, it was a while ago and I don't remember what the fix was). Until then, drive carefully and good luck!

Behavior is typical of a bad connection or intermittent short circuit in the ABS harness.
