Why are my abs light and traction control light always on?
They stay on forever. I have a 2000 vw mk4 vr6. I have replaced the front left and right abs sensors, a pain to do, and I ran a vag-com check on my car. My car is throwing this fault code- 0283 abs sensor front left g47- I understand this could be the sensor or harness, so I looked around again for issues.
The harness is taped up in places, so I undid the tape and checked out the issues. Some wires were crimped together to make the necessary connections. I took off the crimps and checked out the wires. I spun new wires together and soldered them securely together then taped them.
Now, I get the same issue when I clear my abs error codes. Same 0283 issue.
- the wire harness was previously repaired before I got the car, and when I got the car the abs light would go on and off, and I d hear terrible braking issues right before the abs light went on to show it wasn t working.
- I saw no issues with the connections with the harness or the abs module with my trained eye.
Could I have overlooked something? Could the sensor just be bad in itself? Should I take the brake assembly apart to see if I can find the issues?

It could be a wheel bearing failing.
It could be a wiring harness.
Stop chucking parts at it and get a proper mechanic to check the car.

If your car has a toothed ring on the axles by the CV joints look for broken teeth. You need a mechanic with an ABS scan tool to hook up and monitor the data to see what the sensors are reading. You won't get anywhere by looking at it. Soldered wires are always suspect.

So you have found a previous repair why stop there? Put your trained eye on a ohm meter and go from the sensor plug to the ABS computer, the repair you found may not be the only one in the system. Don't find anything swap sensors if you can and do pull the wheel to make sure there is not metal stuck to the end of the sensor or the tone ring is not full of stuff, make sure the air gap is right also. And never believe anyone named "lowlevel".

VW. Worst electrical systems of any cars out there. They make 1960s Lucas electronics look like Star Trek.
