Why do people get crushed when they arent accepted to Harvard or Yale or Princeton?

I get for a lot of people it would be their first choice school, but why does it surprise so many people that they get rejected? Their overall acceptance rate is around 7 percent, so that would mean 93ish percent of people are denied? If anything why do people have ANY sure fire confidence when applying to these schools if it's more likely they will be rejected?

    considering some of the graduates from those schools who are members of congress and continually make fools of themselves why would anyone want to attend those schools?
