mechanic asking too much for piston rings?

my car recently started burning oil, now my mechanic told me that piston rings should be changed and i know that piston rings are damn cheap and would cost around 50$ (for piston rings, head gasket and valve seals) but he is asking more that 10 times for entire repair.

is extra amount he is asking for is his labor charges? or anything else needs to be replaced that costs higher?

You cannot get an intelligent complete answer.

    We need your info.

You can get the labor manual at the library and find rering, or replace piston rings and see how that engine goes together etc.

There may also be labor combinations in replacing yours that must be added together for a labor total.

If you update your question, tell all about it.

Make, model, year, engine, trans. add-ons.

You can get further depth and meaningful

    responses.

Accurate diagnosis! , get a second mechanic and tell us his method for the smoke test. his leakdown numbers etc. the compression readings.

The condition of your engine, when were your last gaskets or seals ?

What is the vehicle's MILEAGE? That adds labor time required.

Remember, if your tech works at a real shop, he has it equipped one way. for speed and profit.

If he does it for you his own way, at home,.There is no way

we can guess what he is doing or how long the circumstances can make it take. If he is doing several things to it while it is torn down, add the labor operations for the deepest part, the furthest in, and all the labor to access it.

Then, shop supplies, tools, as required.

A second estimate from a pro reputable tech. would specify all this written

    if it was requested.

Update: if he rents equipment, or gets things done by machinist ?

VS. whether it is just chico and the man, starring jack albertson.

Anyone that would vote no is clearly not a tech

And has never successfully repaired an automobile

    themselves. They would sabotage yours.

If all you want is to have a set of new rings slapped in the engine, just forget about that because the problem will not be solved. You need to measure the cylinders and determine whether or not they need boring. The cylinder ridges must be reamed and cylinders honed or the new rings will never seat and seal. That's work, buddy. The connecting rods and bearings need to all be examined for wear. I'd replace them after going into the engine that deep, but you aren't happy with the job not being simple. When I had my engine rebuilt, I stripped it and took it all to the machinist to get the block bored and crank refinished and all new oversized pistons pressed onto the connecting rods after they were all balanced. That cost me about $400, then I put it all together myself. Maybe you'd be happy with a used engine from the salvage yard. See what that costs you and I wish you the best of luck.

Replacing piston rings entails tearing down much of the engine. Very time consuming, very expensive. $500 to replace rings sounds like a bargain.

First thing to do is to go to another mechanic (or two) and get another opinion, and quotes. I'm not convinced your problem is rings anyway, and it would cost a lot more than that to do it if it was.

500 bucks for a ring and valve job and you are complaining?!?! I'm incredulous. That's a screamingly good deal.

If you want to know what he is charging you for, the only way you will find out for sure is to ask him to break down his quote. He is allowed to make a profit, too. After all, he needs to pay his rent as well.

As was already suggested, since it's such an easy job and the parts are so cheap, probably best for you to order the rings, head gasket and valve seals yourself, and tackle it over the weekend.

I have to state this is sarcasm, someone will actually think I'm serious and thumb me down. Tools alone to accomplish the job properly will run you way over $500.

Hi so what do you expect his time costs money chances are it needs a rebore as well that means new pistons not just piston rings. so the question is can you afford if if not cancel it now. as he doesn't want to out of pocket.

Yeah, you can get the parts and do it yourself for 50 bucks. It's a lot of work. 500 for that job is reasonable. Hell, I would even say it's low for many vehicles. That's A LOT of labor. Do you know how to remove the head or get to the rings?

I own a garage ..uk ..we would never change just the rings ...the pistons will be worn ..as well as the bores ...and the slots in pistons where rings sit ..the gaps will have worn ....if you get it done ..sell it ...before more trouble

Not sure where you live but that much work for $500 sounds like a scam to me - WAY TOO CHEAP. Normally 1500 to do just the head gasket.
