Want to start business. Should I quit my job, school, or both?
Here's the rundown. I'm 27 years old, father of a newborn and 3 year old, work full time as a housekeeper at a university for 90% discount, wife doesn't work so she can take care of the kids, I'm 40 credits in for a degree, not attending this semester, and have an idea for a business that will require less than $4000 startup money. It's a good plan and I've had business classes. The problem is that we only make $1200 a month, working full time is keeping me from taking more than a class or two per semester, and my dream is to own my own business and be my own boss. My wife wants me to have a degree before I start my business so we have a better chance at me getting a decent paying job should my business fail. I also live 45 minutes away from work and school and that's one way. We live in one of the lowest cost of living states, but still struggling, and worried about an emergency coming up. The business would be profitable if I were to get 1/3 the national average business for it.

With one income I most definitely would continue working and your eduction.
I like your desire and passion for business ownership, continue to persue it. A $4000 start up is great, but investing it should only be done when you're absolutely ready. Can this business be started part time from home? How much more expense will it require to run the business? How much of your time is needed to keep it going?
Someone mentioned having your wife start a day care at home. Another good idea. There a many good home business ideas the two of you could do from home. Do some research around it, you'll find some very low cost businesses. Find something the two of you do from home. Create enough income where you can start your other business.
Now you'll have some choices with your job, education and running two businesses.

Finish school first you are almost there. Try to save let's say 10% of each of your paychecks and sell stuff that you no longer use in ebay or craiglist. Put all that money in an extra bank account dedicated only to fund your business. I like your attitude but you have a family to take care of. This is why I recommend you to play it safe while you are pursuing your dream! Good Luck!

As soon as she is physically able your wife should start a home day care business. Her additional income should be saved in a savings account dedicate to start up of your business. Not easy but you have an advantage over most-you have a goal and a plan.
