Pronunciation of "wh-" (for speakers of American English)?

In a dictonary, the pronuciation of, say, "when" is:

/hwen/ or /wen/

I was wondering if you pronounced the consonant "h" or not.

Thank you in advance.

更新:

Or, do you ponounce like "ʍen" or "wen"?

According to International Phonetic Alphabet, "ʍ" is the voiceless version of the consonant "w."

I heard more and more Americans are pronouncing like "wen."

So, I'd like to know if it's true.

更新 2:

OK, I found it's not good dictionaries say "hw-."

I'll change the question.

"Where" and "wear" are pronounced in the same way?

The pronunciation varies depending on who is speaking. Southerners in the United States will often pronounce wh- words as /hw-/, and some British English speakers do as well. In other cases it is simply pronounced /w-/.

In short: there are two pronunciations, and they vary by region/speaker. In general however, Americans pronounce these words /w-/.

No, the 'h' sound isn't pronounced. You do not pronounce the 'h in 'th' or 'ph' is is silent. you take your lips and lightly blow to make a soft sound. If you make that sound when you say the w sound of the word 'when', it will almost feel like an 'invisible' 'f' sound. People don't really emphasize the 'wh' sound though. When I was in kindergarten I remember learning about 'soft w' and i don't remember what we called the other one- just a plain 'w' sound. Soft 'w' was the ' wh.' we practiced the 'wh' sound by lightly blowing through out lips.

In this particular case 'when' is pronounced "wen"

keep in mind-not in all cases but with the word 'when' the H is silent.

    :)

I don't, although some others do. It all has to do with the region you come from.
