Stock 305 Small Block Chevrolet Timing Gears?

Did GM ever install a 100% plastic (not coated) timing chain (gear set) on a 305 small block? We have a running dialog with "Robert the bonehead Ford lover" who maintains GM did.

He said it's true because ("he's) replaced them. The local Chevrolet parts counter and mechanics plus two racing engine builders, one on PA and another NY say to tell "ROBERT" he's full of you know what comes next. Robert lies a lot also!

to tell you what I gained from experience, I use to rebuild engines since I was 16 years old, and I have only encountered a fiber impregnated gear to gear on the old ford Flathead v8 engine, as far as GM, Chevy , if I ever replaced the chain I never noticed any plastic gears how ever this could be true after I stopped rebuilding motors , but you have never heard of any engine damage if this were true with Chev. How ever this is true with a

455 Pontiac engine plastic coating on steel . Maybe for less chain wear or noise reduction. Every one I've ever seen when the engine was tore down was cracked or broken.

ask Robert what year 305 engine was his found so called experience?

Never seen an all plastic one. GM for sure did a lot of car engines with the plastic toothed ones. Im not sure what the main body was, it was some sort of metal but for sure not steel. Could have been aluminum but it almost seemed lighter weight. Did a bunch of Buick 231/3.8's in the earlier 80's that were still that way. Even the mighty Cadillac 500 had em.

From '68 - '72 GM used a steel gear with nylon teeth across a range of engines for reduced noise. Always a good idea to check the for plastic bits at oil change time.

You got to cut Robert some slack. He is going by Ford practices and is used to seeing a lot of busted engines. But no, they were either steel or nylon coated aluminum gears.

Yea country I would agree with the chevy and race guys rob is full of it, just nylon coated gear set that I know of, BUT I would go with a double roler gear set, really not that noisey and just a good idea to use

Nylon teeth on aluminum gears. Very common until 1980 at least.
