英文知識交流--Gerunds&To-infinitives

1.He is so weird.He always pretend _________(be) someone else.

2.Mary ______(pass,fail) the exam.

3.Peter _______(choose,use) this book instead of that one.

    Is that mean 001 gave the right answer of 3? Why that should be present tense? Somebody make a choice should be an event. So it might be pass tense in indicative mood or future tense in subjunctive mood. It can be present tense only in imperative mood but question 3 wasn't.

    tenses must be simple past if refers to a special case,unless specified, I think, I agree with 002, either.. or is a phrase that has nothing to do with gerunds/to-infinitives/ bare infinitives

    4 learned to speak

    just my seemed-to-be correct suggestion

    (1)to be (inf)

    (2)either passing or failing (simple active voice gerund)

    (3)chooses to use (inf)

    (4) learned to speak (inf).
