What combination is better for CAD/Math engineer & programmer?
Intel i5 760 (Socket 11)+ GeForce GTS 450 1GB or an AMD (price equivalent) Phenom II X6 + Radeon equivalent, both machines have with 4gb RAM. I mainly plan to use it for CAD (Auto CAD and Solidworks), Math (Matlab Control toolbox), programming (PHP, Java, C#) and running virtual web servers on Sun Virtualbox (PHP,MySQL, maybe JP JSP on linux/unix or windows test servers). I also have good base knowledge in Adobe products (Photoshop, Illustrator & Flash). You don't have to be expert in every of these fields to answer, you can answer for any of these individually.

Your biggest problem will be RAM. I suggest that you get an i7 because CAD requires maximum power from both cpu and RAM - the more power from both the better. I have a year of CAD experience and I can tell you that your RAM will be the biggest bottleneck...next, the cpu.

With the expection of CAD, everything else you want to use will be processor intensive. So get best bang for the buck processor. i5 is good economic value, so good choice there.
4gb RAM kind of sucks for CAD, I would run 64bit and get 8GB of ram. But if you aren't going to be a daily user of CAD and you are limiting your file sizes to more recreational use as oppose to large assemblies in an industrial setting, I would say 4gb 32-bit system is enough.
The main problem I see is your graphics card. For cad you want a card designed for OpenGL not DirectX. the GeForce GTS is a gaming card. you would be much better off with a FireGL or FXQuadro. That is going to be the biggest problem. If you want to double this computer as a gaming system, much like my home rig. I would definitely up the gaming card power because it is going to be really inefficient doing software openGL vs. Hardware.
