Re-registering a car in New York State after a divorce?

My divorce is almost final (I live in New York State).  I will be getting the car out of the divorce.  I just found out that there are outstanding parking tickets on the car (it is registered in my husbands name).  Now the registration is suspended.  I am responsible for paying off the past tickets before I can re-register the car in my name or is bringing a copy of the divorce decree and surrendering the license plates enough?

That's a tricky one. My understanding is that the car can be sold to you (or acquired in a divorce) and the tickets will be entered on his license as a lien. The next time he goes to renew his license he will have to pay the outstanding ticket plus any extra outstanding late fees. Check the web site or call Monday to find out for sure, but that's the way i think it goes.
