Does Portland have a downtown?

I want to move. I want the west, I want nature, I want rain, I want a big liberal city. All descriptions point to either Portland, Vancouver, or Seattle. So I'm looking them up.

I've found that if something exists, there's a group for it on Flickr. So I'm trying to find pictures of these cities there. And from what I can tell, there is no such thing as Downtown Portland. The closest I can find is this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/habibi/218535469/in/p...

so, does portland even have a downtown worth speaking of? According to flickr, it really doesn't exist. And I dont think I could ever settle somewhere without a downtown worth speaking of.

Yes Portland does have a down town. Although it's not as big as Seattle it does have all the nice looking buildings and most business. What makes this city so unique versus other cities is that almost a lot of it is pretty livable. NW Portland has many shops and restaurants surrounding the area that also includes apartment's and homes. Also it's very accessible, the MAX system is very good and clean and almost takes you anywhere down town. Next few years this line will expand even farther. There are plenty of shops downtown such as Pioneer Square which is a mall with lots of shops, also there are stores such as Nike Town, Macy's, Nordstrom and Banana Republic in one centralized location.

Sure Seattle is bigger, more people and nice looking, but what makes the people that like Portland is that its not as hectic as Seattle, lots of people like the small feeling of a city. Portland is laid out nicely and almost easy to get around to unlike some other cities. As for Vancouver, it's a smaller city than that of Portland. Since it's only a 10 min drive, consider it a back yard to Portland.

My suggestion is that you take a trip to Portland, walk around town and check out the area. See if you like it. If not than you can compare it to Seattle.

And one more thing, Portland is about 90 mins outside of many recreational areas, such as Mt. Hood Meadows and Timberline lodge, you can go skiing or snow boarding...or build a snow man!

Portland has a great down town. Architect students from all over the nation are sent here to see how we blend the old with the new. Plus the pearl district is being developed, it's like 40 acres of new businesses and condos.

In Portland you are 2 hours from the beach, 1.5 hrs from skiing, 3-5 hours from white water rafting. And 10 minutes from a good hike in Forest Park.

Vancouver dosen't have that much of a down town, since most people shop in oregon to avoid sales tax.

Portland does have a downtown that is decent size for the number of people living in the area. Also next to downtown and kind of part of it in a way is the Pearl district.

Seattle's downtown is bigger but Seattle has WAY more traffic issues than Portland does, so if you don't live in the downtown area of Seattle (expensive!) it will take you awhile to even get to the downtown area at all.

That picture you posted, the downtown area is off to the left.

Yes. It does have a downtown, although not very large. What's nice about it is that it is a very livable area, with convenient public transportation and bike paths. Portland is a nice, clean and friendly city, one of the best cities on the West coast, I think.

Yes, it does. It is not huge (but not small). The best thing about is that day or night, weekday or weekend, it is active with real people doing real things.
