Anyone else out there had a VVT I problem with their 2002 Toyota Corolla?
I just purchased a 2002 Corolla 3 1/2 months ago and also purchased the extended service plan. About a week ago, my check engine light came on, and the service department told me I need to replace my VVT I Controller and the cam sprocket. Of course, they say my service contract does not cover this repair. Before I start raising a stink with the dealership, I did some research and found that this may be a common problem with 2002 Corollas and wanted to see if anyone else out there had this problem. Thanks.

There are three likely sources for the problem: the two you listed and also lack of oil changes on the car. Corollas don't usually sludge or gum up as a result of lack of oil changes unless it was very severe, so whereas that is possible, it is not likely. Of the other two, I have probably seen more of the cam sprockets fail than the controllers, although anything is possible. In the process of checking, the dealership shold have used the scan tool to activate the controller, and if it didn't activate, codemn one part or the other. The most likely scenario is that one or the other has failed, and the dealership is wanting to replace both to cover themselves, which I understand, but it is expensive. The controller is the cheaper of the two repairs, but less likely to fail. The gear is more likely, but much more expensive to repair. You might ask them to consider replacing just one to detemine where the problem lies. Since the controller is easy to replace, ask them to try that, and to PLEASE consider taking it back if it doesn't fix the problem. The gear is WAY too much work to replace if that is not the problem, so I would go the other route first.
It is somewhat a common problem, but not nearlly enough for Toyota to consider replacing it automatically. However, you can always contact National Customer Service and seek some help from them. Unlikely, given the year, but you never know. Second, ask to speak to the OWNER and plead your case that they should stand behind it just 3 1/2 months after purchase!! Especially since that expensive service contract didn't cover it.
Let me know how it turns out, and if I can help any more!
God Bless!
