Why does he want to hold my hand?

I told this boy that I like him and now he wants to hold my hand in English class I'm quessing under the desk where no one will see but that's the only class where I sit by him but the boy who likes me(which is his bestfriend) sits right across from us and I asked the boy if he likes me and he said no then why does he want to hold my hand and why does he want to do it in that class if he doesn't like me

This boy knows I like him and he's really popular and I'm sorta in the middle and I don't know what to do plz help before I go back to school on Tuesday and he tells everyone

I have heard from like 5 people that he likes me and 2 being his bestfriends but I think that he knows I know and he doesn't talk or notice me as much as he did before how do I get him to talk and notice me more

I'm only in 6th grade and so on Instagram I posted this pic that if someone liked it I would say if I would date them or not to the boy I liked I said maybe and he keeps saying that I like him and I always say maybe and I try to text him but I alw get afraid and chicken out and say like wrong person or something and I just wanna tell hime that I like him my bestfrie said that I should over spring break before we go back
