  • Need a phonetic translator online, from English to Japanese. What do you use?

Guys, I need to translate some product names, from English to Japanese. I know some times there are translations that I feed back in Google Translator to check, and the translation is perfect (for example, スワップ for Swap), but sometimes they came out not super close.

Is there a online translator (machine, not human) site that you used before, and it translates phonetically to Katakana relatively well?

Obviously, Google Translator, but that seem to translate it literally all the time, but I just want phonetic translation...

    Thanks in advance.

  • How long does it take to get a brand new passport? How young can you be before you can air travel?

I'm planning a trip to Japan, which will take place two weeks after my baby's due date. Our first child, travelled back to Japan after she was just one-month old, and she was fine. We are not trying to set records here, but just with our daughter's school, and my work, the only time that would allow all of us to travel and visit my wife's family, would be about 2 weeks after the due date.

Anyone travelled with young babies before (younger than one-month old), please feel free to share your experience.

Since we go back and forth all the time, we have plenty of experience traveling with a baby, infant, or young child.

  • How much are car rentals in Cairns, Australia for a foreigner?

Guys, going to visit Australia in a couple of months.

Usually, I'd like to rent a car when I get to a place where driving isn't too different from U.S. (non-erratic, and not complicated). I think Australia qualifies as an easy-to-drive country.

I have driven both in right-hand drive cars and left-hand drive cars, but obviously, I don't have an Australian license.

With International Driver's License, how much is it to rent a car in Australia? I'll be flying in and out of Cairns airport.

From online site, sounds like cars starts around $90 USD? Kinda pricy? Or, am I searching on the wrong site?

    Your experience and suggestion welcomed!

    Thanks in advance!

  • My 03 Accord starter died once... when should I get it replaced?

Guys, I have a 2003 Honda Accord EX-V6, had it since it was new. It now has 130K, was just in for a transmission overhaul, and it won't start after couple short drives.

I thought battery was dead, so I called AAA. Guy came out, thinks it's the starter, used a metal rod and banged on what he said was the starter. It still wouldn't start.

Since that guy drove a pick-up, he couldn't tow me to a garage. He called another guy with tow truck.

Second guy showed up, also thought it was a bad starter, bangs on cylinder thing that was next to what the first guy banged, and car started right up. Took less than 10 seconds.

MY QUESTION IS, HOW LONG DO I HAVE UNTIL THE STARTER COMPLETELY DIES? AND HOW MUCH TO CHANGE OUT THE STARTER?

I now drive with a metal stick in my car, in case I need to bang on the started just to start up the car.

I don't recall ever changing the starter before, but the part didn't look Honda. First AAA guy said it looked factory, but not to me.

Anyway, I wonder if I should just get it changed out, or is this a problem that could possible be dormant for the next 10K miles?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Driving on slipping transmission...?

Guys, my 03 Honda Accord V6's automatic transmission is going out again.

I had the transmission changed out at 50K, now at 120K, the second one is showing signs of slippage.

This second transmission somehow is leaking fluid somewhere, and slowing draining ATF. I'd usually fill 1 quart or so every two weeks, but wherever the leak is, it won't leak completely out, but low enough warrant fill-ups.

I had 2 Honda dealerships check out, they're both saying that only replacing the transmission will fix the problem. They can't both be lying to get my business.

My question is this: If I keep driving on this transmission that's about to go out, am I risking damaging other parts of the car?

As much as I'd like to drive it to a dealer and get it change out, I have to wait to save up enough so I can afford to change it out. So, if I keep driving on this somewhat damaged transmission, am I going to need to repair some other parts because I drove more than I should on a damaged transmission?

    Your expertise is appreciated.

  • What online Japanese translator do you use for addresses?

    Hi guys,

I do some selling online, and sometimes I have to ship to Japan.

In the past, I just copy and paste entire address in Japanese, but lately, I've been forced to use English on my shipping program (update in the software program that require all addresses in English), and I'm encountering problems with some Japanese translations.

While I can read Kanji, so I can roughly tell where a city name starts and ends, but with some smaller or more specific areas, I can't tell what it's saying.

I've used Google Translate, and I'd use the phonetic sound translation as a start, but some have given me the false or wrong translation. I just started to use Bing Translator, seems maybe a tad better.

Sometimes Google Maps does a pretty good job when I plug in the address in Japanese.

    Here are my questions:

    A. Do you guys have any other suggestions as what online translator to use? What do you use?

    B. For names, is there a good Japanese translator to use that's somewhat accurate? Google Translate have been giving me very weird translations...

    MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE!

  • How to get smaller calves? What exercise to do?f?

Hi, I'm naturally big calved. I don't have to do any exercise to make them look Olympian-sized calves.

Is there an exercise that will slim down the calves?

Was at the gym for the first time in years, and I could swear that this girl was on the treadmill for over an hour, just walking up a storm. My machine of choice is the stair master...

Would either one slim down one's calves? Long distance walking, or climb up the Empire State Building?

If you know of certain workouts that will slim down the calves instead making one look like a gold medal cyclist, let me know.

  • How to turn on lit keyboard on MacBook Pro?

    Hi guys,

I'm trying to figure out if my dad did something to his laptop that turned off that function.

This is a MacBook Pro (it says so on computer), 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 2 GB of memory, running OS 10.5.8.

The body looks like the current MBP with normal display (not the one with Retina Display).

My old MacBook (before they decided to keep the white plastic bodied MacBook as MacBook), I know there were two levels. The entry aluminum bodied MacBook's keys did not light up. You had to get the $1499 model to get it to light up. I had to returned the entry level MB and get the $1499 one.

This one, is I guess, the second generation (or first update of current aluminum body design) MBP, where they decided to call all aluminum bodied MBP, instead of the lower end aluminum bodied MacBook, and higher end, MBP.

Anyway, I could swear that I've seen the keyboard on this MBP light up before, but it does not light up now. My father has a tendency to try and hit any key, to try and see what it does. Perhaps he did something somewhere?

On the MacBook that did not light up, the F5 and F6 keys were just blank. On the ones that does light up, it has that graphic of brightening and dimming on the F5 and F6 keys. This MBP does have those graphic on F5 and F6. They're not blank.

In System Preferences, under Keyboard, there is a box to check (or uncheck) to illuminate keys under dim-lit situations. It is checked, but it just won't light up!

When I hit F5 or F6, the brightness logo appears on screen with a "prohibited / no entry" logo.

Did I recall wrong? Did this first revision of the entry level MBP retained the feature where you need to get the higher level MBP to get the keys that lights up, just like the entry level MacBook that I had?

I really thought all MBP's keys light up...

Anyway, if you have one, or have ran into the situation I'm in, let me know if there's a way to turn it back on, or I'm just remembering it wrong...

    Thanks.

  • Are brake rotors covered under 3 yrs / 36000 mi warranty?

I have a 2010 Honda Accord EX-L Navi. When driving on freeway, if I hit the brakes at 70 MPG or above, I feel vibration at the pedal and the car shakes a bit.

I know it's a simple procedure of getting the rotors turned (cut) and this should go away.

My question is whether or not that this is covered under the 3 years / 36000 mile warranty?

The car is still under 3 years, and only 17K miles on the odometer. Still the original owner (my father).

If I take it into a dealer, is there a chance that they're going to rule it out as NOT under warranty?

Car is relatively well taken care of, not abused, except all oil changes have been done privately, and not at the dealers.

Anything I should worry about? Anything I should say?

  • Is there a import duty on items shipped from US to Canada?

I sell stuff online, and often to Canadian customers. Is there a import duty for my Canadian buyers if item is purchased and shipped from U.S.? Is there a dollar amount limit? Over certain dollar amount they would have to pay a percentage?

Products are usually just small toys or automotive parts.

Things I sell are typically under $100, sometimes if they buy two at a time, it can be close to $200, but that's it. Nothing $500 or more, ever!

With the NAFTA agreement, is there suppose to be duties or fees for stuff purchased and shipped from U.S. into Canada? I know I bought CDs from UK, and the value was $120, but I never got charged anything.

I just want to know as 3, 4 years ago, buyers from Canada may ask to declare item as GIFT, but I haven't heard that request in a long time.

If you buy stuff from U.S. all the time, please let me know your experience.

    Thanks in advance!

  • What should you bring as gift to friends in Italy?

HELP! I leave in 24 hours...

My wife and I will be visiting a friend (more of a friend's boyfriend) in Italy. I'm wondering what we should bring as gift, as we may be staying at his house for a few nights.

I was thinking along the line of something local from California (where I'm from), but I'm not sure if there's anything famous locally made here in California that would make a good gift.

The only thing that came into mind was wine. Anything else? How much should it be?

This item also cannot be too perishable, as it will be a week after I leave before I land in Italy (have a few other places I need to visit).

    Thanks in advance.

  • What's the website that allows people to share photos tagged at a location?

    Hi guys,

I know I visited a site where people can upload their pictures from a location based on a map, kinda like geotagging.

Basically, you can create an account, and then you can upload pictures and you have to tag where the picture is taken. I never uploaded anything, didn't have an account, and now I can't find it.

Most of the pictures are scenery, or of buildings, I'd say. Portraits are not usually found there. Pictures were quite good, actually. It was interesting to see how many different pictures were taken say Niagara Falls, but were from various angles and locations.

Let's say you went to Paris, and took a nice picture of the Eiffel Tower, you TAG the picture as WHERE you took the picture FROM, and NOT of. You tag it as you took it at the corner of XXX and YYY street... at least that's what I believe that's how it works. So, if I go on a map, I can see pictures of people who uploaded as taken from THAT location.

The website, if I recall correctly, ends with ....ios, so something like www.xxxxxxios.com

Anyway, any photographers use this site and knows it?

I'm planning a trip to Paris, and now I'm trying to book a hotel, and I want it close to good vantage points to take a picture of the Eiffel Tower (I'm only spending about 20 hours in Paris). If I know which angle or direction will yield the result I want, I will book a hotel around that location.

I know it's not flickr, I don't think it's Picasa, unless it got bought out by them ...

Any ideas? Any suggestions where I can see something like that?

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP.

  • What's a movie so good that you can watch it again and again, year after year...?

Here's the tricky question that has many good answers...

I'm looking for the perfect movie, can be any genre, that year after year, you can still watch it, and enjoy it as much as the first time.

One movie that I really liked the first time I watched was Good Will Hunting. But after not seeing it for many years, I watched it again on , and I can see flaws.

Is there a movie that you've watched it again and again, and it's still as good as the first time you watched it?

It can be any genre. Comedy, action, suspense, horror. Just looking for a good movie that I might have missed but worth checking out. I'm a lover of good movies. As long as it's good, I'll respect it for what it is.

    THANKS!

Stupid question to ask, I'm sure. But in certain cultures, you are suppose to bring money to a funeral, or memorial service. Just want to be sure.

I'm about to go to one today, and I'm not sure if I need to bring money, or anything? I believe he's already been cremated, but today is the service and last chance to say farewell.

Service is in California, USA. Deceased is a friend, who is Chinese. His family are Chinese, too.

They were ok with money, although he was the breadwinner of the house, so now I'm not sure.

Do I bring anything? I don't want to be rude and not have something, or have something only to upset his family.

I sell some products online, a variety of stuff, basically whatever I think people will buy online, on eBay and some other sites. I will be attending a conference/expo/show of sorts, and just in case I need to be keeping in touch with people I meet, I'd like to have a business card ready. I have the logo and art ready, but I'm just not really sure what to call myself.

I appreciate your input and your thoughts into it, and will select one that I will use for 10 points!
