  • What qualifies as an emergency for 911?

    For example, say someone is throwing a wild party at 3:00 in the morning and disturbing the neighbors. Is this an emergency? No one requires the fastest possible assistance in this case.

  • When should I call a girl?

    I recently asked a girl out that I don't know very well. We've had 2 conversations just by being in the same place and went to a movie together as friends in the last month or something. A few days after the movie, I called her, asked her out and now we have a date for Friday next week. The day after setting it up, I had a facebook chat with her, which all of my friends said was a terrible idea. Both conversations lasted like a half hour. She's pretty cute and funny, so I want to see how it goes. When should I call her between now and the date so as to not appear desperate and not also like a jerk??

  • Why do accelerating charges produce electromagnetic radiation?

    Not a homework question, I'm just wondering. I've read Griffith's E&M book cover to cover, but most of it is all formalism without giving me a very good intuitive grip for these sorts of things. I understand how a dipole would produce EM waves, but not how something that doesn't undergo a full oscillation would do it. Is it a quantum thing, or can it be explained classically?

  • Opinions on a rice krispie cake recipe?

    So, it's my friend's birthday soon and tomorrow I'm making her a rice krispies cake (her 2nd favorite food is rice krispies treats). I live in a dorm so my cooking abilities are somewhat limited by space, availability, and tools. Basically, I'm just going to make, frost, and decorate some RK treats. What sort of icing should I use? Whipped cream? Chocolate? Vanilla?

  • Improper lane change in California?

    So, I'm doing an internship in California (so I'm out of my home state), and while driving my lane very suddenly turned into right lane only, so I put on my signal, checked the mirrors, and started to change lanes before my friend stopped me because a cop on a motorcycle was in my blind spot and another second or two and I would've run him over. I pulled out of the lane, got pulled over, and got a ticket for improper lane change. It doesn't say how much it's for on the ticket. So, how can I get the fine as low as possible (I'm not going to say I didn't do it because I did), and are there any ways to keep my insurance from finding out since I'm out of state? Are there any other repercussions? This is my first ticket ever after 4 years of driving.

  • Has anyone seen the comedian Carl Rimi? Is he funny?

    I'm thinking about bringing someone to his performance at a local comedy club and I'd like to know if he's actually any good.

  • What men's body sprays smell the best? Colognes?

    I've decided I should probably get some sort of scent for going out, but I've also discovered that as a general rule I'm completely clueless about this sort of thing. I don't want to spend $60 on a cologne that smells bad or that only gets 10 uses or whatever, and I'd also like a body spray for more casual occasions. Women especially, what scents do you prefer?

  • My apartment complex owes us $3000 dollars but changed management and now won't pay. Is this legal?

    We paid for something that was $3000 and got it in writing that our apartment complex would pay us back. The new manager says that since the old management made the deal, they don't owe us.

  • What are some good physics destinations in North America?

    My physics club is talking about going on a spring break trip, and we need someplace to go that's at least slightly physics-y. Chicago and San Francisco are on our list, but we're looking at all options. What are some other interesting places? Does Puerto Rico have any interesting physics?

    A physics club I'm in is talking about going on a spring break vacation. We can probably afford anywhere in North America. Where are some good destinations?

  • Limit z->z0 Re(z)=Re(z0)?

    I've got to show using the definition of a limit that

    Lim Re(z)=Re(z0)

    z->z0

    So far I've got |x-x0|<epsilon, but I can't think of any possible way to relate epsilon to delta such that |z-z0|<delta

  • Is there any way to solve this differential equation?

  • In general, how do I prove a limit exists using the definition of the limit?

    Do I just find some relation between |f(x)-f(x0)|<epsilon and |x-x0|<delta to figure out exactly how epsilon and delta need to be related for this to definitely be true? Such as, |f(x)-f(x0)|>=|x-x0|, therefore delta can be equal to epsilon, or Sqrt(|f(x)-f(x0)|)>=|x-x0|, so delta can be the square root of epsiolon.

  • How difficult is it to run cable to different rooms?

  • Can you check your baggage the night before a flight?

    I'll be flying out of Tegel at 7:00 Saturday morning and I'm thinking of just sleeping in the terminal. Can I check my baggage in that early, or do I have to wait until the morning? Anyone know for a fact whether I can sleep there? Sleepinginairports.com only has reviews over a year old. What's the earliest you can walk into an airport to check in for flights?

  • Recently (in the last year), has McCain been meeting with as many officials as Obama?

    Every time I log on, I see "Obama meets with Merkel", "Obama meets with Treasury chief to discuss housing crisis", "Obama meets with generals in Iraq"... Seems like he's busy getting as informed as possible, and I never hear the same about McCain. WITHOUT, I repeat, WITHOUT any crazy rants about media bias against McCain, can someone point me to a place where I can read about McCain's doings? Also, if you happen to be against McCain and want to reply with something negative about him without providing me with a place I can get this information, please just don't reply at all.

  • What is the lifestyle of a college professor like?

    My life plan at this point (I'm entering my junior year in physics) is to graduate, go to grad school at a hopefully top-ranked school, get my Master's and Ph.D. there, and then start on research. However, I keep hearing all of these horror stories about grad school and teaching at the college level. I mean, I love physics, I love teaching (can't get enough of tutoring), and I've worked with and run my own research projects and love it, but I don't want my entire life run by my job. I'd like to be able to afford a middle-class house with a middle-class car and a family, and also have time for hobbies and things totally unrelated to physics. Maybe join a bowling league or run for city council. If I want to be uberrich, I recognize I'll need another project like a book deal or major invention, but being rich isn't necessary. Is this possible, or is life in academia the broke, barely surviving, all-consuming spiral of frustration that people make it out to be?
