This is the issue for this poor dog now and whoever takes him on REALLY needs to know that they're prepared to work with him.

Another issue with byb's who don't consider what they're putting together to see what a nice mix we can make. 

The shelter needs a better screening process.    The dog is a "handful" and needs placed in a home that can deal with an overly energetic dog.

He needs to be placed with experienced owners that can continue to work with him.He may be more suitable for a home that can give him a JOB.

What’s horrible about returning a dog that was not the right fit for the family nor would they have loved him like he deserves, nor would they have included him with their family.   

Rather than setting him “free” by driving him off to some farmland and letting him ‘return to nature’ as some morons think is proper for dogs, they were respectful enough to an animal they didn’t really want or like anymore and brought him back to the shelter.  At least at the shelter he would be warm, dry, fed and responsibly taken care of until he finds his forever home.

A nasty alternative would have been the dog locked up forever in the back yard away from the home and family, on a chain and just fed and watered daily or maybe just fed tube scraps, and could have waisted away alone.

Even destructive dogs need to get a chance at home life, there is someone out there that has the patience, love and understanding for him.

When I got my first rescue he was a 7 year old fat sheltie.  I had him for close to a week and taught him how to walk on a leash, sit and down.   Whenever a family member left the house the dog ran up to the door and emptied himself this was frustrating to a 14 year old.  My dad helped me try to train him, we tried leashing him, putting him in the bedroom... didn’t. matter, he decided if he couldn’t go with, he would mark wherever he was if he couldn’t go with.

Besides emptying in the house he chewed millwork, dug holes in the carpet, pulled the linoleum up and had several other bad habits.   We had an animal behaviorist try and help but his suggestion was to return the dog and get another one more suited for family life.   When the dog was eft alone for more than ten minutes, the destruction would start (besides the obvious puddles left)  

I tried everything from walks to playtime, he reAlly didn’t have much play drive but he did play tug o war.   I felt bad for having to surrender the dog but technically it was dads decision to return him and get a different dog.

My next dog was a mystery breed pup,  she reminded me of a raccoon with the mask on her face.  She was only 26 weeks old and very hyper per the shelter.   I had this pup another 19 years before she left me.

The sheltie that was not a fit for me was adopted by a family with many kids , they lived on a farm and the dog was put to work with the kids all helping. I was told he ran most of the day and was too tired most of the time to be destructive with them, they also had two other dogs so he fit in well.  The shelter I adopted my dogs from posted the success stories on the walll,with the dogs pictures included.

I do not think the adopting family had any IDEA how much dog or what a challenging dog, Rusty was.  His suggested breed mix is super-high energy and obviously very smart.   "Rusty" is not a normal or typical shelter dog.  The shelter did not do enough to educate or advise the couple, IMO. Nor did they continue to talk to them or counsel them (if issues arose) after he left and yet, all good private rescue groups - do that.  

While when younger, Rusty had been in a foster care situation - this is one of the BIG DRAW BACKS on leaving hard-to-adopt and/challenging dogs (long term) in shelters.  They sort of go BONKERS, and can get dog aggressive, in such a setting.

He ought to be have been in a foster home for much of this time (not just been given training AT THE SHELTER).  But if not good with other dogs, that would have been a challenge.  He needed to go to a very experienced dog owner/trainer or into a "working" home, perhaps adopted to a farm or to a marathon runner and should have gotten bucket loads of exercise (daily) and continued in obedience training, with the new owners.

Nothing horrible about realizing a dog isn't the right fit and returning it. Far better than keeping a dog when you can't meet its needs and making you and the dog miserable.

The shelter KNEW that dog was a very challenging dog.  They should have done several home visits with the dog before agreeing to place him there permanently.

This is nothing more than a case of two people getting married before getting to know each other well enough.   Love is not the same thing as compatibility.

The shelter was correct for defending the family, although I wish the shelter had owned up to their own shortcomings when it comes to screening a home for a dog with such particular needs. 

No, they're not horrible for returning the dog. They were not well suited to making a home for it, so they did the right thing by returning it to the shelter. It's far better to do that than to keep a dog they aren't prepared to take care of.

I absolutely HATE 'returning back'.   Return is quite enough without added the back.

I read this story but as I don't know the circumstances, the people, or the dog, cannot comment.   Fact is the more a dog comes and goes, the more baggage it picks up so the harder it's going to be for the dog to ever settle.   Very sad.
