    In conditional, "if" sentences, "would" is used for something that is probably NOT going to happen. It's called the "unreal conditional" in some text books.

    "If I want to see you, I will have to turn around." (This means I probably will turn around)

    If I wanted to see you, I would have to turn around. (This means I don't want to see you and I won't turn around.)

    it is would (I'd have to; I would have to).  the implied thing is "in order to know you are there", I WOULD....  But I am not going to.
