To the question posted a few days ago about Maam vs Miss?

The poster (anon) seemed to feel maam was insulting, but I missed at the time that she included the other person hammering away with maam after every sentence.  Sirs can do that too AND, if you are calling a guy Bob, say, or not calling him anything, then get all formal and revert to "sir" THAT is a rejecting message.  Seems you could use maam in the same way.

"Ma'am" is only considered "insulting" in some quarters because we now have a fascination with youth that didn't used to exist. "Sir" runs the gamut from a child to an elderly man and there is no version of it meant just to pertain to the young. The fact that in every language there's a married vs. unmarried salutation for women but not for men says a lot about how our cultures have developed.

Of course people might think that today. Children haven’t been taught manners or to respect others in a long time.  The breakdown of morals, manners, and respect in our country was a deliberate political tactic.  So it's not surprising, that someone would consider another’s show of respect disdainful.

    Ma’am is not insulting.

Miss might be to women over 25.
