Yes. It was alleviated by the dentist by putting a small bit of gauze that had been soaked in clove oil in the socket, and it subside almost immediately. (The pain pills didn't touch the ache.)

I have 7 or 8 of these in my life.
"Dry Socket" is basically a sealed infected wound in your mouth. It will not heal on it's own and go away - especially if you have a stich or two in there keeping it closed. Matter of fact - every minute you have it, it is getting worse and you are swallowing small amount of infected material all day long. The infection will quickly turn into a full blow abscess that eats away at your gums, can cause teeth next to it to fall out, and damage the jaw bone close to it. Of course, you would probably have gone insane from the pain before it got that bad.
The solution: Open and clean the wound. This will not make it feel better - yet. Pack the wound with gauze soaked oil of cloves. In about 5-10 minutes the pain will be 98% gone and you will be fine. You will need to have that gauze soaked in oil of cloves changed every 24 hours for 5-6 days. After that you will have a small hole where the wound was. Food and debris can get trapped in there and cause a follow up infection - although it wont be near as bad as the original. Dentist will give you a small syringe with a plastic hooked end so you can irrigate the hole. Keep up with vitamin C and foods with lots of vitamin C and over time the hole will fill in.
The sooner you get it cleaned out - the smaller the hole will be and quicker it will heal and fill in.
