Do parents really call their daughter Buffy?
Did they before Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Or did Josh Whedon invent the name?

"Buffy" could be termed as the goofiest nicknames for Elizabeth. So perhaps most parents will avoid calling their daughter by this nickname.

Buffy is a nn for Elizabeth probably from Biff/Biffy
Personally I’ve never known anyone named Buffy

The only thing I've ever heard called Buffy (outside of that show and a kid in a fictional novel) was a Pekingese.

Whedon didn't invent squat. The nickname has been around a long time.
There was a TV show in the 1960s called "Family Affair." One of the characters was a little girl named Buffy.
Edit: I just found out that Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Queen Elizabeth II's late mother) was called Buffy as a child, so we're talking early 1900's now.

Buffy is generally a nickname for Elizabeth, and predates Buffy the Vampire Slayer by probably many, many generations.
