Most monkeys are omnivores. Monkeys love eating ripe fruits and seeds but, they also eat vegetables. Beside bark and leaves, they eat honey and flowers too.

Also, when fruits like bananas are green, they continue to ripen after being picked, and they're usually mostly yellow by the time they get to your local grocery store. Monkeys like to eat bananas because these sweet fruits are found in the wild where primates live.

So in short, monkeys eat things like bananas because they taste sweet.

Monkeys in the wild never eat bananas. This has always been a myth. They will eat them if provided but will eat most any type of fruit or vegetable.

They are among the rare animals that are able to open bananas like we do so we tend to represent them with bananas because that makes them look smart.

In reality, monkeys eat all sorts of fruits, nuts and insects but do not run into comestible bananas in the wild. They eat bananas when we give them bananas.

They do seem to enjoy the taste, but it's logical. Bananas were engineered to be good for humans, and monkeys are quite close to us.
