Without the large US government who would raise tariffs on imports destroying what is left of the free-market so we pay more?

    Very good question. There was a time, in the not so distant past, when conservatives claimed to be for capitalism and a free market. I was taught "build a better mouse trap and the world will beat a path to your door." Even Reagan resisted the pressure to put tariffs on Japanese cars when they were beating the US car companies to shreds. Now, however, it's apparently ok to put tariffs on products and interfere with market forces- if you're doing it to protect your friends in the oil industry.

    Personally having more Americans employed is the primary goal. It doesnt help anyone if they cant AFFORD to BUY anything now does it??
