Lottery Question: "Scratchers."?
I'll be retiring from my workplace where I have about 70 co-workers. I've never bought a lottery ticket. I was thinking of buying each of the workers a "Scratcher" lottery ticket (about $1 each). Do those tickets expire if not used within a certain time? I was thinking of buying about 10 at a time over a series of days so not to take too much time at the checkout. Can I do that and would they still be valid?

Yes, these tickets have an expiration. The expiration varies from state to state. With that said, I wouldn't worry about it. First of all, the expiration timer (often 6 months) doesn't start until the game has been deemed "over". (That's usually after the last jackpot ticket has been sold.) Second of all, if you want 70 tickets, just ask for 70 tickets at the counter. It would actually be quite easy. They would most likely activate a whole new "book" of tickets. That's 50 tickets right there usually. Then they could just count out 20 more.
Even if I'm off on the number in a book of tickets, it still wouldn't take long at all to count 70 tickets. I wouldn't worry about holding up the line. If you really want to do this, just buy them all at once.
***More important - Lottery tickets are a HORRIBLE gift, in my opinion. For the majority of people who lose, what will they think? "That was a waste of time and money", most likely. For the majority of people who win (maybe 14 - 16 people), most will get $1, some will get $2, and maybe a couple will get $5 or $10.
It's really a waste of money. If these people actually mean something to you, put just a little more thought into this. Perhaps host a breakfast with donuts or bagels. Perhaps just a nice card. Maybe buy 70 candy bars. Anything but lottery tickets.
