Master Builders Australia chose International Women's Day on 8 March to announce the appointment of its first female CEO in 127 years.

Is this a token appointment to prove their equality credentials?

It could be. It was certainly a token announcement.

The rate is not much different in the USA, where women make up only 14.6% of executive officers, while in Australia 11.8% of CEOs are women, just 2% less.

The West does not lead in the largest numbers of female CEO's, Russia, Indonesia, Latvia and the Philippines, where women comprised over 40% of those in senior-level positions. Russia takes home the gold for the highest proportion of women in these high-level job titles, with 43%.

Men are able to continue to live in the lie that women are incompetent through this kind of bizarre logic here. If a women proves her competence, men just use the "she ONLY got the job because she's a woman" excuse. NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING that any woman will ever say or do can convince men that we are equals.

It's important to work hard and treat people fairly, but NEVER forget how they see us.

If she isn't the best person for the job, the people who appointed her obviously aren't the best people for their jobs.

She's been the head of a large company before and has the experience required. It's not like they've just thrown the receptionist into the role for a publicity stunt and hoped for the best.

Would you think this way if a man was appointed CEO of a company in a female dominated industry?
