Anyone found a good treatment for old-cat arthritis?
My old fellow has gotten worse this year. I tried chews from Petsmart and he hated them (wasted a lot of money). Got a heated pad, for sleep, but he really is getting stiffer and seems to be in pain. Pills are out of the question..he will NOT take them. Thank you.

Does he eat canned? The Cosequin capsules can be sprinkled over canned food. Have used them multiple times and that seems to work. Other than the heated bed, all you can do is make life easier for him. The make carpeted ramps and stairs so that the cat can easily get up and down from things without jumping. Drs. Foster and Smith make a cat tree that is a like a spiral staircase leading up to the perch. And if he has trouble getting in and out of the litter box, go to the dog section and get one of the dog litter boxes - they have a front that is very low. And if it gets really bad, discuss Meloxicam with the vet. It's not really something that is good for cats (its an NSAID) but given every three days can be effective in pain relief. With our old ones we have to balance quality of life (which includes pain relief) against long term side effects. They are working on pain relief drugs for cats with arthritis, but they are not there yet. You can also discuss Buprenex for him if he's having a really bad day. It's tough to see them get old.

You can buy cod liver oil for pets which may help. Just offer him some on a teaspoon. Find some sardines in sunflower oil and mash them up a bit after draining off the excess oil. Also maybe crush conditioning tablets (brewer's yeast) with a pestle and mortar and mix them into chicken pate for cats.

Try adding some Shark's Cartilage to his food. If that doesn't work, the vet can administer an Adequan injection and that ought to help - Adequan is usually quite effective. It is not a pain reliever, but helps the joints regenerate to a point and helps relieve inflammation. Good luck with your kitty, and it is great that you love your cat.

Take cat to vet. Find out what options you have. Pill grinders are available everywhere. They grind pills to powder which can be mixed with food.

I got my old man cat some chews from Amazon called Zukes.

It got him back into action and he loved them, ate them when he wouldn't touch the ones I bought at petsmart.
