How many of you learn joint locks and also the counters for them.?
I ask because it is standard practice for me to teach both to my students. But it seems to not be the case in many other martial arts schools. This years seminar topic is joint locks and counters because the martial artists that came last time requested it.

In my training and teaching we were taught at least 3 ways to get out of most joint locks. I once attended a seminar given by O'-Sensei Phil Porter (a Judo legend). We had never met before. He did a choke hold and asked me how many counters I had for it. I took a moment and counted the ways that came to mind and replied 17 and I'm probably not thinking of all of the ways I know. He did not believe me and asked me to show him some of my counters. I showed him 10 or 15 counters that day.

That as well as throws, chokes, and submissions. I never studied trained, or taught a technique of any kind without also seeking ways to counter or defending against them so that I also had that ability as well. Learning the counters for things like that is partly what makes a martial artist more well rounded as well as expands their skill and knowledge about those things and understanding them better is what I have found.

I do for certain. It seems some schools neglect to teach the counters and escapes.
There is a reason I said escapes. They are not the same and require a different set to learn in addition to counters.

I do. It is a contingent aspect of chin-na and Chinese martial arts as a whole. I wish I could attend your seminar, but I have familial obligations.

been taught a few. Pugpaws I will not be able to attend the seminar this summer. Is there any chance that you would give a private lesson.
