English Doctor shortage.Would it be practical, for newly qualified MDs to be required to complete a couple of years as a GP,too ?

更新:

By this I mean, adding 2 years working as a General Practitioner, before being licenced to the Speciality of choice ?

更新 2:

As a compulsory part of their training,as a "National Service",on standard pay rates,it would scarcely be a hardship.

Why would they not want to treat patients ?

Surely that's their main reason for choosing the Profession ?

Isn't it ?

anything that curbs this country's "reliance" on doctors from the developing world is a good thing

I don't know if that would ease the shortage of doctors. In any case I can't see why there is a shortage, after all it is a very well paid profession and GPs don't put in the same hours as their predecessors had to. By the way, the problem is not only in England, we have the same problem in Scotland. We also have an acute shortage of carers. One lady spent nearly a year in hospital in Aberdeen because there was not enough carers. Another lady slipped into depression because she could not be released from hospital because again, lack of carers. Bed blocking is a big problem up here in some hospitals. It is not the first time that a doctor has been flown to Scotland from India to cover shortages. It must cost the NHS a fortune.

I'd settle for an 'English' GP. Period.

I can't really understand why there is this 'shortage' to be honest. The hours may be long, but surely nowhere near as long as a Hospital Doctor!!

GPs have different training and its pointless having one if they don't want to do it. In my last Surgery there were 2 young lady GPs and their attitude was dreadful. They were like Head prefects at school.

  • I think you are meant to have a few years experience before you work as a GP. In hospital there is always a consultant checking over you but as a GP that is not the case.

err... to be a GP takes 10yrs, a newly qualified Dr has only done 5-6yr. so how can they do two year as a GP first? when to be a GP takes the longest.

It could be done but would you really want to force people to do a job they don't want to do.
