Threading a Mossberg 590 barrel to accept chokes.?
I am looking to have my Mossberg 590 threaded to accept chokes. I know it's mostly unnecessary, but this is just going to be a project/fun gun.
Looked into an aftermarket barrel, couldn't find any. Checked with the factory, and they have a single one for sale for almost $200, and I'll also be stuck with using their "accu-choke" system, which doesn't have the same aftermarket availability I'm looking for.
So I decided I'd rather have it sent off to be threaded by a gunsmith.
The problem is, I have heard that older 590 barrels had walls that were too thin to properly thread and install chokes, but the newer ones were fine.
So this is a two part question.
First off. What year did Mossberg change their barrel design on the 590?
I bought mine sometime around 2006. I asked the rep form the factory but couldn't get an answer.
Second question. What is the recommended wall thickness on a shotgun's barrel to be adapted for choke? That way I can check my barrel with a caliper to see if it is even possible.
No gunsmiths locally... The few I've been corresponding with via email have all given me the same answer... "I'd have to see it". So I just want a good baseline I can check before committing to sending it off to have the work done.
Honestly, it's been giving me so much of a headache that I might just breakdown and buy a Remington 870... But I really like the 590's action and controls better.
Bonus question. Any recommendations on who I should send this to, to do the work?
Just to clarify. I have other shotguns better suited for field work, clays, looking pretty, etc...
This is just me building up a "fun" gun, because right now that's all the Mossberg is good for.
If I can save money by just having chokes installed, I'm going to do that. If I can't, then I'll look into buying a new gun. Or maybe I won't. It's just for fun after all.

Uh buddy....I don't understand why the "accu-choke" wouldn't have aftermarket availability.... Its the same thread type as the Browning Invector/Winchester Win. Choke... Outside the Rem Choke I can't think of another choke tube system that could have more aftermarket options. I mean there's like 5 companies I can name off the top of my head that uses them and Carlson's and Briley have whole pages in their catalogs dedicated to those chokes.
But honestly bud, you're better off going to Dick's Sporting Goods or Walmart and buying a brand new Mossy 500 or Remy 870 field gun for $300 and building them up from there. Or better yet, getting a used gun in decent to good condition from a pawn shop for $150 and building what you want. Of course you can always go into a gunsmith's shop and get their price estimate... Your money do with it what you want, but if you already had your mind made up then its kinda pointless to ask us a question then huh?
But yes... The wall of the barrel should be thick enough to accept threading. Although this will probably cost way more than you'd like and it's pretty pointless being that there's a myriad of guns out there with a similar form and function that you can just buy... That'll cost you as much or maybe even less than you'll spend on the Gunsmith...

I always used Briley. They were the ONLY ones who would GUARANTEE not to change the point of impact. BUT, expensive, and their tubes are the long type.
Honestly, yep, I think I would just buy another shotgun. Go for a pretty one. You have UGLY covered. OH, come on, just teasing.
I can and do highly suggest a Remington Wingmaster. I know you will feel the difference. A much nicer handling shotgun. We all should display class when afield. A pretty shotgun, the prettier the better. You know, reminiscent of the antique, English Driven Pheasant hunts. I am a huge sucker for a pretty shotgun.
Doesn't have to be fancy, just pretty.

Where is Gunplumber? He has the perfect answer.
I saw him answer a question of this nature a couple years ago......I still spill my coffee when I think about it.
Edit: I guess the bottom line here is - "why". And, that is not a question.
