If plants respire at night, wouldn't that cancel out the photosynthesis?

If plants take in carbon dioxide during the day but at night, release that back into the atmosphere, wouldn't that stop plants from helping the environment? Because what they take in would be just be back in the air.

No, plants use light to convert co2 into sugar, biomass, and oxygen. Surely they breathe oxygen too, but new growth entirely counteracts this effect, producing significantly more oxygen than they consume.

Only if they put back as much as they created during the day and the sun and photosynthesis are powerful and the plant does some portions of the respire cycle even during the day, so the cooler night activity is at a much lower level.
