How to make a gif from a Youtube video?

I've searched everywhere and I can't find a way of how to do this. On websites where you can make gifs from Youtube videos, it adds a watermark, the quality isn't very good, and for some reason it always comes up with an error when I try to post it on Tumblr. I've downloaded PhotoScape to try to make gifs (no way can I afford Photoshop) but this only gives me the option to add photos to make into gifs, not a clip from a video. I do have a Mac, and I know I could make them using iMovie but it just seems like such a long process and also I would have to download more software. Surely there's another way?
