Do bicycle tires go bad in time?
I have some bicycles that I have not ridden in years. Also some extra wheels and tires. All stored indoors. I am thinking of selling or donating these.
Do tires deteriorate with age to the point where they become unsafe and better discarded than used? Some tires in my storeroom have been unused for over 20 years.
BTW they are 27 inch tires on my road bike, but not toy-store cheapos. The bike bought in 1987 has a chro-moly frame. No visible oxidation or cracking.

they do but they can last that long
depends on light, heat, humidity, rubber composition, original condition
if they aren;t cracked they are ok
let the buyer worry about that
just say they look ok but you are not responsible
[basically the whole bike is the same story,
\ example..
what if a brake cable broke?
you can;t see it
you are not the expert
you could test ride it and it doesn;t break, can still break next day]
any bike buyer is responsible for his own safety

Yes, the rubber begins to decompose, dry out, crack, etc. The gummy sidewalls usually go first. Better to replace old tires, tubes, and rim bands.
