Is my kitten's fiestiness normal, or is he on the road to being a mean kitty?
My kitten loves to attack our hands and dig his front claws in, bite, and kick with his hind legs. It was kind of cute when he was tiny, but now that he's bigger, it really hurts! We have all started setting him on the floor and ignoring him when he does this, but he usually comes back at least once or twice before giving up.
Is this normal? I have no idea how old he is, but he's about 1/3 the size of a full-grown cat, maybe a little smaller. Will he outgrow this? Will he calm down after he is neutered? Is there anything we can do to stop this behavior, or is it nothing to worry about? I don't want a mean kitty!
Note: We found him stuck in our fence about 6 weeks ago. He was just a tiny little thing then. We're taking him to the vet this week to get him checked out and to discuss neutering.

When we "teach" our kittens that hands and fingers are toys, this is the result. Put him down, like you are doing, but then offer him a cat toy or feather toy or laser light toy. He wants to play and you must give him a safe toy to play with.
Also, everyone in the family must follow the rule of putting the cat down when he bites and kicks. He will learn if all of you follow through.

it is Absolutely normal, that's how cats play. i will sometimes use large gloves so that i cant feel it, or maybe put you hand under a quilt or comforter. it will hurt when ever you play with a cat. mine hurt me all the time, but their cats. its what they do. this is why i use the gloves and blanket trick. they cannot sink their claws through a comforter or quilt. so if you have one of these, fold it up and keep it in a special place to use for play time with your cat.
good luck.

stop encouraging his bites and scratches. whenever he plays with your hand and hurts you, yelp like little kittens do when they're hurt and recoil. he will pick up the high pitched sound of your voice and recognize it as pain. you should also buy him toys and scratch posts (rub em with catnip) so he won't go ape on your furniture. cat lures and strings would let him use up his feistiness. keep playing with him on a daily basis
