The ancient Romans invented the calendar we use today. They decided to have a 30 day month in each season, so we have the rhyme about September, April, June and November. They made the other months 31 days each, so to have a total of 365 days, one month had to be shorter. February was the short month because the Romans began their year in March. This is also why the months September, October, November and December have their names, from the Latin words for seven, eight, nine and ten. It isn't completely logical, but it's the calendar that most of the world has been using for hundreds of years.

Some people would do that. Gregorian calendar is standard, but I am sure the Earl of Montecristo didn't really mind counting days one by one.
