I have done a similar thing. However, I did not use a long cable from the router. I use powerline adapters that I got from Argos. The ones I chose came as a kit of two adapters and two short Ethernet cables.

One adapter is plugged in next to the router and connected by one of the short Ethernet cables. The other adapter is in another room. That adapter is connected to a Netgear FS605 5 port switch. This an unmanaged switch with auto-switching ports. It is literally a plug-and-play device. One port of the switch connects to the powerline adapter, leaving the other 4 ports to connect your computer devices. The whole network forms a single sub-net, so the computers can still obtain their addresses from the main Internet router.

It will work fine
just a suggestion
have you considerred powerline adaptors?
These plug into the mains and enable you to connect rooms without having long cables running around (but they are a bit slowere than direct wires but faster than wireless)
you have
router -> powerline adaptor -> mains socket (Use a normal mains socket)
Room mains socket -> powerline adaptor -> switch
The switch will then allow you to connect multiple devices in that room to the router
You can add more adaptors and do the same in other rooms if you want

Ethernet switch or hub is a bit old fashioned, these days a bog standard router has a built in ethernet switch, in the days before routers you would have needed an ethernet switch to connect multiple pcs to a network such as in an office or company.

It sounds like you are looking for a router. How many devices will you need? Do you need wireless access also? If you don't know what you are looking for get a router. I put an example in the sources.

Yea that should work.
Your connections will go - modem>router>switch>devices(pcs, game console etc..)
