Mile racing strategy?

What is the best way to win a high school mile race, to front run and set a hard pace to try and get separation, or to have a mediocre kick at the end? Im much more of a front runner, but i could improve my kick. Im a freshman with a 5:35 PR in 8th grade

5:35 freshman PR? That's very good.

With all due respect to Apollena, I disagree. Apollena correctly points out the strategy being used now by world class runners. Adapting the words of the immortal Yogi Berra, "They're them and you're you. If you can't imitate them, don't copy them."

You're a front runner because you're more comfortable with an even pace. And you don't have the flat-out speed to stay with the kickers. So get out in front.

Once you're there, you have two choices: (1) Don't kill yourself so you have something at the end or (2) Push hard early and hang on. Each has an advantage and a disadvantage.

Strategy 1: The advantage is you can hang around or maybe even pass people at the end when the kickers challenge you. The disadvantage is by not blowing the field away, you give the kickers a chance to catch you.

Strategy 2: The advantage is you can open up enough of a lead to demoralize the kickers. They might just give up on catching you and be content fighting among each other. The disadvantage is if they do catch you, you may not have anything in the last quarter to fend them off.

I'll leave it to you to decide which you're more comfortable with. You know very well that whatever you choose to do, it's going to hurt. But I sense you are up to the challenge, that you're willing to suffer more than your opponents.

Long term, work on both your overall stamina and your kick. Talk to your coach(es) and experiment with different strategies. Identify someone -- maybe on a rival school -- a little better than you who you can target. Stay at it, lift some weights, stretch, and make sure to have fun every so often.

    Best of luck!

as a results of fact the different adult males have stated, you need to draft off of the different runners as much as achieveable. additionally think of of the race in increments of one lap instead of questioning you may desire to run 4 laps. on the grounds that your kick isn't that solid, initiate making your pass with fairly over a lap to pass (500-600 meters left) and want you may carry it! this could take the kick out of the different opposition legs in the event that they choose for to pass with you and in the event that they do no longer pass with you they are going to have a hard time catching up with this sort of short distance left.
