Which CPU is better for an old rebuild?

Upgrading an old PC to use with linux, I currently have the second processor listed but i can get the other one very cheap, is it a lot better than the first one?
The first one is clearly faster on paper but is a lot older and the clock speed is lower, and im not sure if the hyperthreading will make it faster than the 2nd without extra clock speed

I have that exact Pentium 4 in a old Dell Dimension 8400 that I resurrected to use as a Media Center computer. Considering it is old technology the thing runs pretty good with 3GB's of ram and Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. Thinking if you can run the Pentium 4 you might be able to run this. See the links below. I am thinking of trying to throw one of these in the Dell. Might not work and might literally blow up the computer. While I am not real tech savvy I do know a thing or two and this is how I learn. I am hoping it will work though. Socket is the same and I hope that because it is also a has an 800 FSB that it will work. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

The first one is good. The lighter the Linux the faster and more ram can be used for applications.
The choice of linux effects speed.
After years of testing I have found that Puppy Linux gives the best speed with functionality if installed as a frugal install.
Puppy Linux is good as the operating system is only 150mb on the hard drive and loads into ram so limits reads to the Hard Drive which is a bottleneck when using a traditional linux ie ubuntu 4.2 GB which cannot load into ram.

And I use Puppy Linux in the office with clients and at home, as its a mid range Linux with no restrictions therefore puppy is a great learning tool as well as an every day desktop. I have used Puppy since version 0.1 in June 2003 and professionally for the last 7 years. I have not used any microsoft product for 4 years. The first on is a bit better , with better clock speed , caches , and threads.
Use the 2nd one , ull get better performance.
