How would you start training a dog without using treats?

I want to train my dog but don't want to use treats. I've read that treat training wasn't effective. Can anyone direct me to a good website so I can start

Training is based on rewarding the dog - treats are the easiest and most universal reward that works best for most dogs. You can use a toy or verbal praise or petting or playing - some dogs are rewarded by getting to "tug" on a favorite toy.

Treat training can be quite effective - so long as you use treats as rewards instead of bribes, couple them with a verbal marker so that they can later be phased out, and use well-timed corrections to proof once the dog has learned a command.

There are literally hundreds of successful methods for training dogs - some would argue that every trainer uses a slightly different "style" and combination of techniques - each exists because it worked for some dog with some handler to reach some goal at some point. I recommend finding a trainer with similar goals and techniques that you are comfortable using and signing up for a basic class - you can learn a lot more with the instant feedback and in-person demonstration and explanation than we can convey via text online.

    Good luck!

I guess I am really old fashioned, because I have never used treats to train those behaviors. My dogs just get a "good boy" and a pet when they do well, and that has worked well with all but one. For the walk, if the dog gets ahead of me or behind me, I give a sharp tug, and when the dog is where he should be, I relax the leash. There is no pressure on the leash when he is beside me. That way the most comfortable place to be is where I want him to be. I have leash trained at least a dozen dogs that way. As far as jumping on people, I just tell the dog "down", and reinforce what I say with a firm touch. That is all it takes with most dogs.

Treat training was very effective for my dog but, if you don't want to go that route, use lots and lots of praise. Lots of it and, get really excited when he does a trick. Clap your hands, tell your dog how good he is and pet the heck out of him. He/she will get even more excited every time you get excited.

All my dogs respond to 'good dog', but I say it like I really mean it. Take your dog to training club, its a lot easier to show someone how to handle a dog than describe it.

it is the same training, just no food ... i put my pup through three levels of obedience classes and no food was allowed at all ... it is good to train with no food because while food may get faster results, training with no food gets more consistent results ... and now i have a dog that will listen to my voice and not listen just cuz i have food ...
