health insurance for early retirement.?

l want to retire early at 59. l cannot keep my employer group policy, but l am not yet old enough for medicaid at 65. Cobra insurance is only good for 18 months. Is there a website or a place that you can shop for health insurance? l have never had a reason to look for any. What do other people who retire early do?

People who retire early do the same as people that don't have access to employer provided insurance - they contact a local agent that works with all of the major companies in there area to find the best plan for their situation and budget. There is no charge using agents.

There are a few websites where you can get information but if you don't know anything about health insurance it's best to talk with the agent. In my state there are over 500 different insurance policies available so it can be daunting trying to figure it all out.

Unless you have major pre-existing conditions you'll want to check the cost of insurance prior to getting on COBRA because it may be much less expensive.

You probably need a local agent to help you find a policy.

Some people, keep the plan through their spouses. Some people, buy private insurance (which, btw, is extremely expensive in most states, at that age). Some, go uninsured and just hope for the best. Some, get a part time job, for access to that group health insurance plan.

Welcome to the world of individually-purchased health insurance. You’ll want to work with a licensed agent either online or in your area to review quotes and submit an application. It’s pretty easy. That said, your options – and the affordability of those options – are going to depend largely on where you live and what your personal medical history looks like. In most states it’s possible to be declined coverage based on your medical history. Keep in mind that you can’t be declined for COBRA based on a pre-existing medical condition.

Since you’re new to buying coverage on your own, you may want to check out the health insurance buyer’s guide we created. It will get you started with some basic definitions and tips:

If you want to go more in-depth, you can also get a copy of our recently-published book, ‘Individual Health Insurance For Dummies.’ We’re giving away copies free of charge in either electronic or print formats. Request a copy here and we’ll mail it to you:

Yes, there is a website. We are not allowed to identify it here or provide a link, because that is directing business to a non-Yahoo online business. If you contact me by e-mail, I can send you the link. All we are allowed to do here is to answer your question literally: You asked whether or not there is a website, so I can answer your yes or no question: Yes, there is a website.

You can also buy insurance through a local broker or agent.

What other people do is call a health insurance broker and buy health insurance. It's a simple process...most of the time.
