Why do so many Americans support amnesty for illegal immigrants?
A recent poll said that roughly 66% of Americans (with +/-3% standard error) support a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
We all agree that they broke the law by entering this nation without going through the proper channels, and approximately 9600 American citizens per year are killed in altercations involving illegal immigrants each year. Why are so many in favor of rewarding their illegal behavior by putting them at the front of the line for citizenship, and putting people who entered this nation through (their own merits, money, and hard work, and in particular, through) the legal channels of DHS, USCIS, and INS behind these people in the processes?
Should we not be punishing illegal activity in this nation (i.e. enforcing the laws already established), rather than punishing those law-abiding residents of this nation who are seeking citizenship in the legal way?
P.S. This is not a racial argument, nor is this a bigoted argument. It is an argument of law, and the enforcement thereof.
I don't support the path to citizenship.
Even if they just overstayed their work visas, they _did_ break the law. Immigrating here through the legal means on work visas is fine, but they should realize that they are here on a limited time basis, and when the visa expires, they should leave. Those who entered on legal work visas, pay taxes and overstayed their visas are here illegally and should be easy to locate, and they should be granted the opportunity to renew their work visas within 30-60 days to avoid deportation. I don't think the rest should have any such considerations made. If they entered illegally, they should not be here. There can't be any middle ground here. This will only lead to explosive growth of illegal entries into this nation, because there will be no incentive to enter via legal means (it's extremely complicated, whereas walking across a border is fairly simple).

Not sure about you but I don't........ If any form of amnesty is granted it should be for all those legally attempting to become citizens not the law breakers.

There are laws on the books but Obama has chosen NOT to enforce the law. Which causes him to be in violation of the constitution.
Just think what would happen if they were deported:
Well.... There would be less litter on private property along the border.
Rent would go down because there would be a whole lot of apartments empty.
Green Peace would be happy because 12,000,000 less cars on the road.
EPA would be happier because 12,000,000 cars not polluting
Gas would be cheaper because 12,000,000 people would not be buying it
Electricity would be cheaper because of all the empty apartments
Water would be more available because 12.000,000 less people
HOME DEPOT and LOWES would be cleaner and safer
Government could be smaller because you wouldn't need so many border guards
$4 or 5,000,000,000 would not go to another nation.
drug use would go down because of the lower number of mules and dealers
We would need less new highways with less cars/
The government could then repair highways using saved money
The real citizens would be hired to repair said highways.
The people on welfare would be used to clean Hotel rooms and homes
The government would need less money for welfare
Our taxes would go down because 12,000,000 freeloaders would be gone
Use your own brain to add to this list

"Patriotic Americans who help amnesty" is a oxymoron. You can not be patriotic and help others who holiday America's legislation for his or her possess benefit. ==================================== Excellent reply. Even the mainstream of the frame of Congress is starting to rumble down there.

I'm surprised - 66% seems to be high.
If they do start with any kind of 'road to citizenship' - no additional immigrants should be able to be sponsored by these illegals for 25 years.

I can understand if it's children in question. Somebody who came here illegally as a minor below the age of 15 or so really didn't have a choice. At that point you have to do what your parents want you to do, regardless of where you're from. I don't think THEY should be punished for being in the United States illegally. However, if somebody came here illegally as an adult of their own free will, then I think something needs to be done about that.

I will never support giving Amnesty to any form of law breakers. Almost all law breakers/criminals are tax payers of some form, and paying taxes doesn't mean your above the law.
Do the crime, do the time.

Being an illegal immigrant is not a crime. It's only a crime to cross the border illegally, and most illegal immigrants obtained their "illegal" status by coming here on work visas, etc., and overstaying. There's no reason our society should be so punitive as to damage our economy by deporting millions of taxpayers. It doesn't make any sense.
EDIT: "they_did_break the law." Yeah, but that's not a criminal law, it's a CIVIL law, and one that needs to be reformed, because it takes years and years to obtain legal status currently. Anyone who is willing to sacrifice our economic well-being just to vindicate a bad, out-of-date CIVIL law is not thinking straight, or just doesn't care about this country.
