Riding on the Hwy shoulder from Colorado Springs to Houston Tx will I be in violation of the Hwy Safety Dept?

When taking this trip 1000 miles Im sure I will be riding in several different classes of roads. Will the highway patrol harass me for any reason I do not know about? What will I need in this case or what advise can you give from your own experiences.

You can legally ride on most roads .... a bicycle is a vehicle .... but NOT Interstate or other limited access highways. Some divided highways (non-Interstate) allow bicycles, others don't. If there are no signs prohibiting bicycles you can probably assume you can ride it, but if in doubt ask a policeman (s/he may suggest an alternative).

Note, if you are allowed to use the road on a bicycle you don't have to ride on the gravel shoulder, if there is no paved shoulder (best place to ride) you are entitled to ride near the right edge of the main road surface. That said, if it's a busy road, with lots of trucks you should look for an alternate route. Remember the old saying, "he was right, dead right" ... in other words you may legally be allowed to ride on the road, but it would be dangerous to do so.

As a safety measure make sure you always wear bright, visible colours.

The only way you'll be allowed to use Interstate highways is either if there is no other practical alternative, for instance it's the only bridge over a river for 100 miles in either direction; or if you can maintain a minimum speed of 45 mph. The latter is not likely on a bicycle.

Anyway, riding on the Interstate with a bicycle would be very unpleasant. Riding on secondary roads is much less stressful.

Interstate Highways and other "Limited Access Road" are off-limits for non-motorized vehicles and other motorized vehicles non capable of riding at certain speed (scooters, mopeds, farm tractors) and that includes the shoulder.

Every time that you go by an entry or exit ramp, you will have to cross directly on the path of fast moving vehicles. The Highway Patrol will not be harassing you when they impound your bike and take you to a mental institution.

When planning your route you should stay clear off highways by using the bike option on Google maps. It probably will take you form 15-20 days.

Bicycles are not allowed on Interstate Highways or other Limited Access Highways.

Use Google and the bicycle option. They will pull you over on any road that you are not allowed on. With everyone carrying a cell phone these days it wont take long. Check each states department of transportation for recommended cycling routes.
